Erin Sharon, M. Ed., W.D.P.
Reading Specialist, K-12
Reading Specialist, K-12
Erin Sharon is the founder of Winding Way Literacy. She lives in Plymouth with her husband, 3 sons (ages 5, 2, and 6 months!) and dog. She has taught in public schools for the past ten years before deciding to explore a more creative and individualized way of pursuing her passion of teaching reading.
Erin obtained a MA Elementary Educator license (grades 1-6) in 2011 when she graduated from Bridgewater State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. In 2016, she obtained a Master's Degree in Reading and a Reading Specialist license (grades K-12). She has experience as a grade 3 teacher, grade 1 teacher, elementary Reading Specialist, and middle school Reading Specialist.
Upon beginning her work with middle school students, she noticed substantial gaps in foundational reading and spelling skills in many students. Because of this, she became interested in the topic of dyslexia. Upon realizing how common dyslexia is and learning what type of reading instruction is most beneficial for dyslexic learners, she decided to pursue certification in the Wilson Reading System. Wilson is a program based on Orton-Gillingham principles that is designed to teach the structure of the English language to students who are not making progress in their current reading program or who require more intensive intervention due to a language-based learning disability such as dyslexia. When she began teaching Wilson and saw the change in students' attitudes toward reading instruction and saw them begin to make progress, she knew this was the path she wanted to pursue.
While decoding, or accurately reading words, is a struggle for many students, others tend to have the opposite problem. They can read the words just fine but can't seem to remember or understand what they read. To address this, Erin is trained in Lindamood-Bell's Visualizing and Verbalizing, a program designed to develop concept imagery in order to build reading comprehension and higher-order thinking skills.
Additionally, Erin holds a degree in Dance Education. She recognizes the many benefits of incorporating movement into learning and enjoys exploring new ways of creatively including movement in her reading instruction.
Erin aims to help more families who have dealt with reading challenges and haven't been able to find solutions. She looks forward to developing relationships with students and families while helping students achieve success through individual tutoring as well as small-group classes.
