“Teaching reading IS rocket science.” -Louisa Moats
While some children pick up on reading relatively easily, most require explicit, systematic, sequential instruction using a structured literacy approach that incorporates the “big 5” components of essential reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
When we read aloud with our children, we are modeling fluency, building and discussing vocabulary, and improving comprehension. . . But reading aloud is not enough. If your child is not yet reading fluently, they need instruction in foundational skills like phonemic awareness and phonics.
Homeschool reading classes are the perfect supplement to your homeschool reading curriculum. If you aren’t entirely confident in teaching reading, working with a certified Reading Specialist will give you peace of mind knowing that your child is building a strong reading foundation. Even if you are an experienced homeschool reading teacher, you might feel like your child would benefit from some outside support. With small group attention in a home environment, your child is sure to make significant progress and improve confidence.
Classes are in-person in Plymouth, MA. Masks are not required but subject to change. Classes meet 2 times per week in 6 week sessions + 1 week for individual assessments.
To get started, you will be sent a quick assessment to give to your child to determine the appropriate class. I will also assess your child myself so that I know them as a reader before we get started.
