If you have a little PJ Masks fan (ages 4-6), check out these classes that combine my love of teaching reading with my preschooler’s love of Catboy, Owlette, and Gekko! These classes are currently taught using the Outschool platform.
Classes include:
PJ Masks Letter Rescue
If your child is a PJ Masks fan, they will love this class! The teacher will use PJ Masks toys to help act out the lesson. To begin class, students will introduce themselves and name their favorite PJ Masks character. Just when we are about to begin working on our alphabet, Romeo will come and mess up all the letters! Each PJ Mask figure will take a turn rescuing a letter. Learners will use their imaginary "Owl Eyes" and "Cat Ears" to identify each letter rescued. Students may volunteer to name the letter if they know it. Then learners will use their "Super Lizard Grip" to trace the corresponding letter on their printable alphabet tracing sheet. If Owlette saved the letter, learners will use red to trace. They will use blue for Catboy and green for Gekko. The process will repeat until 10-15 letters are rescued. But watch out! If Romeo, Luna Girl, or Night Ninja try to come back and mess up the letters again, learners will have to stand up and scare away the villain using a PJ Masks super power like Super Gekko Muscles or Super Cat Jump. Learners are welcome to bring a PJ Masks figure or stuffed animal to class as well. The main focus of the class will be letter identification and tracing letters (capital only), with a fun PJ Masks spin. Movement breaks will be included in the form of PJ Masks super powers. Students should have some experience with letter identification and letter formation, and they will enjoy the class more if they are familiar with PJ Masks. Depending on level of independence, learners may benefit from adult assistance locating and tracing letters.

PJ Masks Rhyme Time! (And More Fun with Phonological Awareness)
Phonological awareness is the foundation for learning to read. When children have a solid phonological awareness, they understand that language is broken down into parts including sentences, words, and sounds. Phonological skills include counting words in sentences, rhyming/alliteration, counting syllables in a word, onset and rime, and phonemic awareness (hearing and manipulating sounds in a spoken word).
In this one-time class, learners will follow along with Catboy, Owlette, and Gekko, as they identify rhyming words, practice alliteration, and count syllables in words. Watch out! Romeo and the villains will show up along the way and learners will need to use their PJ Masks super powers to scare them away! Class will begin with learners stating their name and their favorite PJ Masks character. We will then quickly go through 3 class rules. During the content of the class, learners will interact by holding up their printable cut-outs of Catboy, Owlette, and Gekko to respond to questions. They may also raise their hand to answer questions verbally. Please note, this is not a phonics class. Children will not be learning letters and sounds; they will work with the manipulation of spoken language only. No prior knowledge of letters, sounds, or reading is necessary for this class. Learners are welcome to sport their favorite PJ Masks gear and bring a stuffed animal or figurine to accompany them in class.

PJ Masks Phonics Fun
Class will begin by reviewing letters and sounds with Catboy and his consonants and Owlette and her “owl vowels”. Next, Gekko will lead students in using their Super Lizard Grip to use a finger tapping strategy to blend and read 3 letter words. Then, students will apply their knowledge of letter sounds to do some “sticky splat spelling” on their own worksheets. This class is interactive and PJ Masks themed movement breaks are included. PJ Masks costumes and figures are welcome as long as they are not a distraction.
